A Region Where George Floyd Could Have Thrived

Community-led solutions from grantee partners are showing us how.

May 25 marks five years since George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer. For many people, this was a wake-up call to injustice that exists in our region, and beyond. For Black communities, including our grantee partners, it was a devastating but familiar confirmation of realities they’ve been facing for generations.

Our region still has a long way to go to make itself a place where George Floyd could’ve thrived. Black community leaders have been naming what’s needed to change since long before he was murdered. Some of these changes call for healing and repair. Others call for everyone to join Black communities to create the opportunities and tools they need to benefit, alongside us all, in this region’s abundance and well-being. True justice. Guided by those closest to the solutions.

They’ve continued to do the work to make change happen, often in the face of deep pain and longstanding challenges. We’re humbled to answer the call to stand alongside them and support their vision.

Several of our grantee partners are working toward this vision every day and with approaches developed by and for Black communities. They’re helping create the kind of just future George Floyd’s memory calls us to pursue.
